Keti Koti 2026

Having a sweet emancipation day in Rotterdam

For Keti Koti Festival I captured people and moments during the yearly celebration of Keti Koti. On this day, July 1st, people from the Surinam community (amongst Caribbean and Cabo Verde communities as well) celebrate the abolishment of slavery in Surinam between the years of 1863 and 1873. Both young and old come together to converse, dance, feast, drink, and above all, celebrate with eachother.

Despite its national awareness and yearly coverages in Dutch media, Keti Koti isn’t an official holiday. Still, I’m pretty hopefull that in the near future it will be.

Cape Verde vs Argentina

The night Cabo Verde won over the hearts of millions

As unsuspecting a small nation of 500.000 people can be in the FIFA World Cup, Cape Verde almost did the impossible. At 00:00 local time, thousands of people from the Cape Verde community came to Biergarten Rotterdam to watch their country go up against the mighty Argentina.

Scoring an equalizer not once but twice, Cape Verde forced the games to extended time. In the last minutes of the game, the reigning world champions still got the win. They weren’t the ones celebrating, however. It was that tiny nation and its diaspora across the globe that did all the dancing and celebrating. Team Cabo Verde lost the game, but their fighting spirit won over the hearts of millions.

I followed Rotterdam native Kay Slice to London, the United Kingdom, to capture his show at the legendary Jazz Cafe.

A night celebrating Ghanaian Independence Day and Ghana's greatest musical export; highlife. Making his debut in London, Kay deliverd a fresh take on West African rhythms, soulful grooves, and poetic rap.

Sonic Expressions

Solo exhibition at Time Is The New Space, Rotterdam

Independent online radio is one of the largest cultural and creative playgrounds for music enthusiasts. You'll find all sorts of people there. Seasoned radio makers.
Record store owners. Local DJs. International ones.
University students. People with normal-ass jobs. Yes, house moms too. What they all have in common is an unquenchable thirst for self-expression throughout music; for themselves and for anyone curious enough to listen.

This project was about capturing the essence of doing a radio show. It's about being in a flow state while mixing records. It's about having a jolly or deep conversation with a co-host. It's about busting a move on a personal favorite or guilty pleasure. It's about telling a story throughout a carefully crafted song selection and taking the listener along on a personal journey. Sun up or sun down, there’s always someone playing on the radio expressing themselves.

This serie of photographs was taken at Operator Radio in Rotterdam using 35mm monochromatic film.
